Car hire or a driver in Mauritius?

Published · The Villa Mauritius

Mauritius is small, the roads are decent, and driving is on the left. A hire car costs from about 30 euros a day, a driver for a full day about 80 to 100. Many people do neither for the first days and both at some point in the week. Here is how to decide, with the real numbers and the traps.

The covered carport of the villa, seen from the courtyard

01

The first question: do you need either?

From the villa, Mont Choisy beach is a twenty-minute walk or a three-minute taxi; Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches are ten minutes by taxi, for a few hundred rupees. Supermarkets deliver. A catamaran picks you up in Grand Baie. For a week of beach, pool and restaurants in the north, a car sits in the carport. The need appears the day you want Port Louis, Pamplemousses, the west coast or the south, or an early tee time on another course.

02

Hiring a car: prices and practicalities

In 2026 a small automatic costs 30 to 45 euros a day, a compact SUV 50 to 70, less by the week; local firms are cheaper than the international brands and deliver to the villa for free, which saves the airport queue. Check that the price includes insurance with a reasonable excess and ask for the excess reduction if you are not used to driving on the left. A standard European, British or South African licence is accepted; carry your passport. Fuel is sold at a fixed national price, around 60 to 70 rupees a litre. The villa has a covered carport for two cars and two more spaces in the courtyard.

03

Driving on the left: what to expect

The first roundabout is the moment of truth; after that it is fine. Speed limits are 110 on the motorway, 80 on open roads, 40 in villages, with cameras on the motorway. Village roads are narrow, with pedestrians, dogs, scooters and buses that stop without warning; drive slowly and expect the unexpected. Mauritian drivers are relaxed. Google Maps works well. Avoid driving in heavy rain if you can, since some roads flood briefly, and avoid Port Louis at rush hour. Night driving on unlit country roads is best left to those who know them.

04

A driver: what it costs and what you get

A car with driver for a full day, eight to ten hours, costs about 80 to 100 euros for up to four passengers, more for a minibus for eight. You get someone who knows the roads, the parking, the short cuts and the restaurants, who waits while you visit and who drives you home after the rum tasting. For Port Louis, the west coast with Chamarel and the south, a driver turns a tiring day into an easy one. Airport transfers work the same way: about 50 to 70 euros for a car, 70 to 100 for a minibus. We book drivers we know.

05

How most visitors do it

Transfer from the airport with a driver, since nobody wants to find the villa after twelve hours of flight. Taxis and walking for the first days in the north. A hire car delivered to the villa for three or four days in the middle of the week, for Pamplemousses, the markets and a day in the west. A driver for the long days, the south and the island tour, when nobody wants to be the one not drinking. It costs less than a week's hire and nobody spends the holiday behind the wheel.

06

Taxis, buses and the rest

Taxis are plentiful in the north and prices are agreed before leaving; from the villa to Grand Baie expect 300 to 500 rupees. Ride-hailing apps exist but coverage in the north is patchy. Buses are cheap and go everywhere, slowly; good for a trip to Port Louis if you like local life, not for a schedule. Scooters and bicycles can be hired in Grand Baie; the coast road to Pereybere is pleasant by bike early in the morning.

Staying in Mont Choisy

The Villa Mauritius is a private four-suite villa for eight guests inside the Mont Choisy Le Golf estate, a few hundred metres from the first tee and three minutes from the beach.

FAQ

Questions about this

Is it difficult to drive in Mauritius?

Not on the main roads. Driving is on the left, village roads are narrow and lively, and the motorway is straightforward. Most visitors adapt within an hour.

How much is a driver for a day in Mauritius?

About 80 to 100 euros for a full day with a car for four, more for a minibus. The villa books drivers it knows.

Do I need an international driving permit?

No, for tourist stays with a valid licence from the EU, the UK, Switzerland, South Africa and most other countries.

Can the hire car be delivered to the villa?

Yes. Local firms deliver and collect at the villa at no extra charge, which many guests prefer to the airport desk.
