Where to stay in Mauritius for a golf holiday
Published · The Villa Mauritius
Pick the coast first, then the type of stay. The east has the most courses close together, the south the highest-ranked ones, the west the driest weather, and the north, at Mont Choisy, a championship course next to the beaches and restaurants of Grand Baie. A hotel on a course suits a couple; a villa inside a golf estate suits four to eight golfers and the partners who come along.

The golf areas of Mauritius
Mauritius is small enough to drive across in under two hours, but each round starts early, so where you sleep decides how many mornings you spend in the car. The courses group into four areas.
| Area | Courses | Character | From Mont Choisy |
|---|---|---|---|
| North-west | Mont Choisy Le Golf | A championship course next to the beaches, restaurants and boats of Grand Baie | Home course |
| East | Anahita, the Legend and the Links at Belle Mare, Île aux Cerfs | Four courses close together, resort hotels on the lagoon | About 50 min to 1 h |
| West | Tamarina | The driest coast, sunsets, a mountain backdrop | About 1 h |
| South | Avalon, Le Château and La Réserve at Bel Ombre, Paradis at Le Morne | The highest-ranked courses, a wilder coast, further from everything | About 1 h to 1 h 30 |

Golf hotel or villa on a golf estate
A resort hotel on a course makes golf effortless: the first tee is at the end of the garden, the bag is carried for you, and some resorts include green fees for their guests on the home course. It is the simplest choice for a couple who play every day and want everything served.
A villa inside a golf estate works better for a group. Four golfers or two couples get a suite each, a pool of their own and a kitchen, for a rate that is usually lower per person than four hotel rooms. Breakfast happens at whatever time the tee time requires, the bags stay in the carport, and the partners who do not play have the house, the beach and the restaurants without following the golfers around. The trade-off is that green fees are paid at the club, not bundled into the room.
| Resort hotel on a course | Villa on a golf estate | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | A couple, a short stay | Four to eight golfers, partners, a week or more |
| Green fees | Sometimes included on the home course | Paid at the club, booked for you |
| Bedrooms | One room per couple, along a corridor | One suite each, with its own bathroom |
| Meals | Restaurants of the hotel | Your kitchen, a chef on request, restaurants nearby |
| Price for eight | Four rooms plus extras | One rate for the whole house |
| Non-golfers | Hotel pool and beach | Private pool, the house, the beach a few minutes away |

Why the north works for a golf group
Mont Choisy Le Golf is an 18-hole championship course on the north-west coast, between Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches. Staying inside its estate means the home course is a few minutes from the bedroom, so an early round and a late breakfast by the pool fit in the same morning. The beach is three minutes away, Grand Baie and its restaurants seven, and the north is the part of the island with the most to do for the people who are not playing.
The away days are easy to plan from here: the west coast and the east are about an hour by car, the south an hour to an hour and a half with a driver. Two or three away days in a week, the other mornings on the home course, is the rhythm most golf groups settle into.

What a golf group needs from a house
Before booking a villa for a golf week, check the details that make the difference once you are there.
- Covered storage for the bags, ideally next to the car
- A bathroom per bedroom, so four players can shower at the same time after the round
- A laundry room: golf clothes need washing every day in the heat
- Air conditioning in every bedroom, for an afternoon sleep after a dawn round
- Someone who books the tee times, the buggies and a driver for the away days
- Enough parking for a hire car and a driver's minibus
