June is the month for long walks, golf and day trips without the heat: the south and the Chamarel area, Port Louis on foot, the gardens. The sugar cane harvest begins, and the mills start crushing. Humpback whales start arriving off the island from June; the best sightings are off the west coast later in the winter. On the north coast the lagoon stays swimmable, sheltered from the strongest trade winds.
